Teaching kids that if they want to go fast they need to know how to break
The drill shown in the video above has been a great tool recently for teaching our youth kids acceleration & deceleration technique as well as back pedal speed & positioning.
3 key areas that we focus on with our youth athletes in this drill include:
1. Deceleration – short sharp steps and a drop in body position as we get to the marker in order to slow ourselves down.
2. Back Pedal – Using that low body position we want to have small, quick steps on the backpedal, being sure to keep our eyes forward so that we stay balanced
3. First step quickness – Teaching good body positions and foot strike to make the most out of that first step to transition forwards
